Quick verdict

The honest take

Circle is built for a digital business. Kannect is built for a community with members.

Circle is polished, easy to onboard, and strong on virtual events with livestreams and searchable transcripts. Its paywalls support installments and coupons, and it has a public discovery marketplace.

Two things make it awkward for an organization. The advertised $89 a month is not the working price: custom profile fields cost $49 a month, branded email $40, the email hub $99, and admins are capped at three. And on G2, Circle's own reviewers list restricted functionality for association needs among the most common complaints.

Kannect is $276 a year with membership tiers, dues, renewals, event ticketing, and check-in included, and 0% on nonprofit donations.

The member app

Your members belong to more than one thing

Both platforms put members in a shared app and sell a branded one as an upgrade. The difference is what the shared app is actually for.

One app, every community

The Kannect Community Hub app holds every organization a person belongs to. Their chamber, their congregation, their kid's booster club, their alumni chapter. We are not treating that as the cheap tier. It is the point.

Because members are not audiences

A creator's subscriber belongs to one community and might install an app for it. A person in a town belongs to five, and will not install five apps. Building for the second case is a different product decision, and it is ours.

The deeper story

Their own reviewers say it better than we could

We did not have to construct this argument. On G2, among more than five hundred Circle reviews, restricted functionality for association-focused needs is one of the most frequently raised complaints.

Custom fields cost extra

A membership organization needs to record industry, tier, class year, or committee on day one. On Circle Professional that is a $49 a month add-on.

Events assume a screen

Livestreams, live rooms, transcripts, all excellent. Ticket tiers and a door list for the people walking into your mixer, not there.

Dues are not subscriptions

Circle's paywalls are flexible, but they are built around selling access, not around a renewal cycle with lapsed members and grace periods.

None of this makes Circle worse. It makes it a product built for someone else. If you are that someone, use it.

Questions

Common questions, answered

Is Circle really $89 a month?

That is the Professional plan rate on their pricing page, and several things a membership organization needs cost extra on top. Custom profile fields are $49 a month, branded email notifications are $40 a month, the Email Hub is $99 a month beyond 10,000 contacts, and admins are capped at three with extra admins at $10 a month each.

Does Circle work for associations and membership organizations?

Circle is built for creators and digital businesses. Its own reviewers on G2 rank restricted functionality for association-focused needs among the most common complaints, alongside gaps in the website builder. The paywall tools are flexible but they are creator subscriptions rather than membership dues.

Does Circle have event check-in?

Circle supports paid events and RSVPs and is strong on virtual events with livestreams and live rooms. It does not offer ticket tiers or attendee check-in, so it is a weaker fit for organizations running in-person events.
